Kensington Corner

Intelligent Futures is a firm of versatile community problem solvers, putting the community’s voice at the center of the change process. In 2018, the founder of Intelligent Futures engaged Hindle Architects to assist in the design of a live-work strategy that could accommodate his young family and growing studio of creative professionals. Located on a busy street corner in the established community of Hillhurst, this unique development aims to introduce a small-scale mixed-use typology into a predominantly single-family residential neighbourhood. The new home for Intelligent Futures includes a flexible workshop at ground floor, and an open-plan studio, recording studio, and team member collaboration spaces on the second level.

The architecture of Kensington Corner is a direct response to its position on a prominent street corner; addressing the established streetscape of infill townhouses along Kensington Road, while making a sensitive transition to the single-family homes along 16th Street NW. The material palette is intentionally simple, complementing the building’s contemporary form, modest scale and refined details.
